THIS SATURDAY will usher in the start of the next cruise season, as the Sun Princess glides into Newcastle Harbour with nearly 2000 passengers on board.
The next seven months will see 10 ships and roughly 21,000 passengers pass through the city, delivering the economy an estimated $11 million cash injection.
Among three maiden arrivals will be the Norwegian Jewel on February 21, marking the first time the Norwegian Cruise Line visits the region.
It is expected to be the last full cruise season before the city’s new $12.7 million cruise terminal is open for business, with construction expected to finish by the end of 2018.
“The channel berth will be a hive of activity as construction commences,” Port of Newcastle CEO Geoff Crowe said. “I look forward to shortly revealing the terminal design and announcing the appointment of the lead construction firm.”
It comes after Newcastle was ranked eighth in Escape’s top emerging cruise destinations worldwide.
