Last month Doughheads called upon their “tribe” of followers to dig deep for Newcastle’s Soul Cafe. They did – and raised $1387 dollars for the charity.
This time around Doughheads will donate one dollar from every “Boobalicious” doughnut sold to the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation. The fluffy doughnut is a cheeky take on an Iced VoVo. Dipped in strawberry icing and coconut and filled with a tangy raspberry coulis, each Boobalicious doughnut is topped with a house-made marshmallow.
The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation offers individually tailored support to women and men affected by breast cancer. The focus is on grass-roots care for victims, their families and friends.
Doughheads is also supporting the foundation’s Bubbly Wonderland on Sunday, October 29, at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley. The annual champagne breakfast raises funds and awareness for the foundation and its community. Tickets cost $85.
Doughheads chief executive officer and creative director Anna Farthing came up with the idea to partner with local charities on a monthly basis to give back to the community, using Doughheads’ popularity and social media reach.
“It’s more than a dollar – it raises awareness and creates a level of engagement which is really cool,” Soul Cafe CEO Rick Prosser said.
A good cause
October is, of course, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many restaurants are creating special pink meals, desserts and drinks to raise money for Australians affected by breast cancer.
Bushrangers Bar & Brasserie at Largs is involved and Adam’s Pizza & Ribs, at Adamstown, is holding a Dine Pink luncheon this Sunday, October 15.
Dine Pink is a new campaign that acknowledges the important role food plays in connecting people, especially at a time when they most need support from their loved ones. Restaurants and cafes will donate proceeds from their special creations to Breast Cancer Network Australia.
The Terrace pop-up restaurant at The Boat Shed has closed to make way for Burger Bros. It is a new direction for Belmont 16s, which has six eateries to choose from. The menu is being designed by head chef David Page and a “soft launch” will take place on October 18. The official Burger Bros. launch is on November 1.
Spring has sprung, Hunter Valley vines are starting to sprout and McLeish Estate Wines is ready to celebrate the birth of a new vintage.
This year’s Budburst Festival takes place at the De Beyers Road, Pokolbin, winery on Saturday, October 28, 10am to 6pm.
Bring a picnic blanket, relax and enjoy McLeish Estate’s renowned country hospitality. Chef Matt Dillow will cook up a feast for guests made from gourmet Hunter Valley produce, wines can be sampled and activities like the “Semsational Oyster and Semillon Masterclass” and barrel-rolling competition will run throughout the day.
“The spring season creates excitement in the region as producers prepare for the 2018 vintage,” Jessica McLeish said.
“The region experienced a very dry winter with low rainfall. Warm spring temperatures got the vines moving early and the spring growth has been fantastic. The forecasted higher temperatures and lower rainfall means the vineyards will grow at a remarkable rate, with anticipated good fruit allowing for early ripening.”

The man with the most recognisable mullet in Newcastle, Daniel “Browny” Brown, opened the doors to Lord’s on Monday. Cafe Browny’s has been a go-to for inner-city coffee lovers seeking a consistent quality drop. His new venture is located two doors down from Apothecary Kitchen at 148B Beaumont Street, Hamilton.
Speaking of coffee, Corner Lane Espresso at 1/15 Alma Road, New Lambton, is another favourite with bean aficionados. And now the folk at Corner Lane have opened a second outlet in New Lambton – Little Lane Espresso Bar at 52 Orchardtown Road and have just celebrated their first month of trading.
If you like your salad, chances are you are going to love what Lulus Bowls: Cafe and Poké will be serving. Poké is a raw-fish salad popular in Hawaii and is working its way towards world domination. Renovations are still taking place at the Hunter Street cafe-to-be next to The Lucky, though, so be patient.
Moving on up
Food & Wine is looking forward to checking out Signora at The Landing Bar & Kitchen next week. The Honeysuckle venue is known for shaking things up over summer and this year is no exception.
Also, the venue’s bar is expanding its craft beer selection by launching a collaboration with Newtown-based brewer Young Henry’s. Hunter Valley native Ollie Margan has re-worked the cocktail and bar list to champion fresh, local and seasonal offerings across the board.
