Disqualified driver charged after teenager dies in car accident

A disqualified driver has been charged following a single-vehicle accident which killed a 17-year-old man near Taree on Saturday morning.

The car carrying three crashed around 2.30am on Saturday, on Cedar Party Road, between Taree and Wingham.

A 17-year-old passenger was killed as a result of the crash, police say.

A second passenger in the vehicle, an 18-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Taree Hospital.

Police say they had observed the car shortly before the crash, as the car did not have licence plates, Superintendent Paul Fuller said.

However it is understood police were not pursuing the car at the time of the crash.

The driver, a 20-year-old man, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, negligent driving causing death, and driving while disqualified.

He was refused bail and will appear at Taree Local Court on Sunday.

A critical incident team is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. A report will be provided to the Coroner.
