SWEET AND PETITE: Good things come in small packages according to the team at Backyard Grannys, who took out the Affordable Housing category at the HIA Awards last Saturday night.

Alex Mitchell and Mark Neumann, owners of Backyard Grannys, were delighted to earn industry recognition from their peers in taking out the Affordable Housing category at the HIA Awards.

Backyard Grannys build affordable designer granny flats throughout Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney. We offer a turn-key design, approval, construction and project management package.

“It’s nice to be recognised,” Mr Mitchell said. “We especially appreciate winning a local award like this because despite us being spread throughout Newcastle to Sydney, we are a locally owned and operated Newcastle business.”

Their winning entry, the Blackwall granny flat (pictured), is full of light, with raked ceilings inside and a wrap-around deck outside which features excellent indoor/outdoor living.

The kitchen has a serving window to make entertaining seamless. The bamboo floorboards run throughout the entire house and this granny flat has two bedrooms with highlight windows and a bathroom with modern fixtures.

“We are the leading granny flat builders in the Hunter, and have  been for the last six years with 50-odd employees,” Mr Mitchell said.

“It’s nice to be recognised by our industry peers.”
