STAGE SET FOR HISSYFEST
HISSYFEST, Tantrum Youth Theatre’s annual short play festival which gives young and established writers, directors and actors the chance to show their talents, will be staged at the Civic Playhouse this week, with shows on Friday, at 8pm, and Saturday, at 2pm and 8pm.
This fifth-year program has the theme Hot+Cold, with 10 diverse plays each running around 10 minutes, and with titles such as Cold Streak, Thirst for a Pirate and Microwave. The plays have strong themes and language and are recommended for people 15 and over. Tickets: $35.70; conc $20.40; 4929 1977.
The show’s participants include Joshua Maxwell, Alexandra Rose, Ethan Dale, Phoebe Turnbull, Alexandra Jensen, Mark Konik, Georgia Wohlfiel, Nicholas Tan, Allison Van Gaal, Havana Stafford, Amy Morris, Jamie Hornsby, James Chapman, Tyler Atcheson, Clare Spitzkowski, Emma Graham, Stephanie Priest, Conagh Punch, Keltan O’Shea, Taylor Reece, Shannon Daley, Bree Cunningham, Jan Hunt, Patrick Campbell, Dez Robertson, Craig Lindeman, Olivia Jubb, Maddy Bell, Luke Davies, Sam Hawkins, Stephanie Rochet, Charlie Eastwood, and Michaela Phillips.
Newcastle Awgie-winning playwright Vanessa Bates helped the writers to develop their plays before submitting them.
Emerging playwright Emma Graham said she was surprised how emotional she felt watching her play, Cold Streak, performed. “The actors and director have perfectly captured not only the characters but the message of the play”, she said.
