NEWCASTLE continued their best-ever start to an A-League season with a 3-0 thrashing of Wellington Phoenix at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night.

Striker Roy O’Donovan scored another two goals, taking his tally to seven from five games since joining the Jets from Central Coast at the start of the season.

Newcastle have now won three games and drawn two and sit third on the ladder with 11 points, behind Melbourne City (12) and Sydney FC (13).

The Jets also kept a clean sheet for the first time since round 19 last season.

The Jets battered Wellington in the early exchanges but it took until the 37th minute before O’Donovan opened the scoring.

The Irishman capitalised when Wellington defender Goran Paracki attempted a back pass to goalkeeper Keegan Smith, which was intercepted by O’Donovan.

He blasted the first shot at Smith, who parried it, then scored on the second attempt.

His second goal came in injury time when Dimi Petratos got in behind the the defence and centred for O’Donovan, who scored from point-blank range off his thighs.

Andrew Nabbout made it 3-0 in the 55th minute with a clinical finish.
