NEWCASTLE City detectives have released an image of a man wanted for questioning over an armed robbery at the Mayfield KFC.

The Maitland Road fast food restaurant was robbed at knife-point by a shoeless thief shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

The man allegedly threatened staff with the knife, demanding money, before fleeing with a sum of cash.

He was last seen running down Corona Street, police said. 

On Friday, detectives released a CCTV picture of a man they believe could assist them with the investigation.

The security image depicts a man wearing grey track pants, a black long sleeve jumper and a red bandana around his neck.

The man is described as being of a large build with short brown hair.
