UPDATE: Reports have indicated the scene has been cleared, but commuters have been advised to exercise caution, allow extra travel time and to expect significant delays.
A man in his late 60s has been transported to John Hunter Hospital after a serious crash involving two cars closed the Maitland Road in Sandgate this morning.
NSW Ambulance were called to the scene at around 7.50am on Friday, where the found the man conscious and breathing, but bleeding from the head.
Maitland Road was closed to eastbound traffic near Wallsend Road and diversions via Newcastle Inner City Bypass were put in place, but traffic is heavy with lengthy delays.
Buses were also been delayed up to 45 minutes.
Westbound traffic was slow past the crash site. Commuters have been advised to avoid the area this morning.
