A MAN has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run in New Lambton that killed a pedestrian in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Police said the 44-year-old allegedly struck a man “who stepped out onto the roadway” on Railway Road shortly before 3am.
The driver allegedly failed to assist and left the scene in his Holden Statesman.
The pedestrian – a 54-year-old – suffered critical injuries and died in John Hunter Hospital a short time later.
Police arrested the driver about five hours after the alleged hit-and-run and he was taken to Waratah police station for questioning.
He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, fail to stop and render assistance after impact causing death, negligent driving occasioning death and not give details to an injured person.
He was granted conditional bail.
He will front Newcastle Local Court on January 25.
Police urged any witnesses to come forward.
Paramedics said they were on the scene within five minutes of the call.
