The upcoming NCC Summer Bash will provide a genuine pathway for Newcastle cricketers according to Paul Marjoribanks.

The Newcastle District Cricket Association chairman believes the T20 tournament, backed by council and separate from the regular first grade competition, helps to create a direct road towards Sydney scouts.

“The NCC Summer Bash is the most significant competition of the season in regards to creating opportunities for players to play at the next level,” he said.

“Some good performances could lead to selection in the [Newcastle] Steel team to compete in the NSW Premier League, which then puts you in front of Big Bash franchises in Sydney.

“For better or worse times have changed - unlike previous eras.

“These days you could take 10 wickets and score a century on a Saturday at Harker Oval and it would not register outside of Newcastle. Dominate in the Kingsgrove Cup and you will be noticed.”

The inaugural NCC Summer Bash starts on Tuesday.
