NEWCASTLE’S Suzy Batkovic has a chance to emulate her great friend and fellow Opals legend Lauren Jackson by winning a fifth Women’s National Basketball League championship.
Batkovic’s Townsville Fire qualified for the three-game decider, against Melbourne Boomers, after eliminating Sydney Flames over the weekend.
The Fire will now hold home-court advantage in the series opener at Townsville Stadium on Saturday.
Game two will be held in Melbourne on Thursday week and game three in Townsville on Sunday week, if required.
Jackson, regarded by many as the greatest women’s player of all time, won a title alongside Batkovic with the Australian Institute of Sport and also four with Canberra Capitals.
Batkovic won another grand final with Sydney Panthers and has two to her name since moving to Townsville.
The 37-year-old skipper led from the front in the semi-final series, producing 14 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday’s 68-65 cliffhanger, and 19 points and 15 rebounds in Thursday’s 78-49 demolition.
