A fire caused a power outage at Bennetts Green that forced the closure of several major stores during last weekend’s heat wave.

The Newcastle Herald understands that Harvey Norman, Bing Lee and BCF were among the shops that had to close their doors on Sunday after they lost power.

One outlet had a sign in the window that said: “due to no power we have had to close. Sorry for any inconvenience”.

The outage came after a power pole caught alight on the Pacific Highway, near South Street, on Sunday afternoon.

It came as sweltering conditions gripped the Hunter, with temperatures in several parts of the region passing 40 degrees.
