A 23-year-old man will face court over an alleged knife-throwing incident at Hunter Street, Newcastle

A man was expected to appear in court on Sunday charged with the alleged assault of another man in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Shortly before 12pm on Saturday, officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command were approached by a passer-by outside a café on Hunter Street, in relation to an earlier incident.

Police have been told a 23-year-old man armed with a knife was having an altercation with a 24-year-old man, not known to him, seated outside the café.

The armed man had allegedly thrown the knife at the man, narrowly missing him.

Witnesses intervened and apprehended the armed man.

Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command were alerted and arrested the 23-year-old man at the scene.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with wield knife in a public place, and two counts of common assault, and affray.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Sunday, January 14.
