A man has been charged after another man was seriously assaulted in Newcastle yesterday.
Just before 6.30pm on Sunday, an altercation broke out outside a licenced premises on Wharf Road, involving two men.
During the altercation, a 45-year-old man was allegedly punched once to the face.
He fell to the ground, hitting his head on the concrete and lost consciousness.
The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He remains in a critical but stable condition.
A 43-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Newcastle Police Station.
He was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, February 1.
