With an explosion and a cloud of dust the final boiler and coal hopper structures at Munmorah Power Station were demolished on Wednesday.

Using controlled explosives the structures came down about 9am and marked the next stage of the Power Station demolition.

The boilers were the largest to be the demolished in the state, weighing in at 32,200 tonnes and 60 metres in height.

Following the successful demolition of the chimney stacks in March last year and boilers three and four in May, the blast was the last explosive demolition event to be carried out during the course of the power station’s removal.

Demolition company Liberty Industrial will now come in with a giant excavator to process the debris.

“Wonderful to see the final explosive demolition event safely completed at Munmorah Power Station,” Liberty Industrial director Simon Gill said.

“Our site team has worked tirelessly over the past three months preparing for this event.”

One final major demolition event is planned for 2018, the completion of the removal of the power station is expected to be finalised by October.

Last year Munmorah Power Station’s twin chimney stacks fell to the ground – signalling the start of a new era and the sad end of one for others.

On Sunday, March 26 at 10.11am, 11 minutes after schedule, southern Lake Macquarie’s skyline markedly changed for the first time since the mid-1960s, as what is being billed as one of the largest power station demolition projects in Australia made itself known.

Hundreds who gathered in a nearby park – many of them former employees of the power station – let out a collective gasp as the pair of 155-metre stacks made their 10-second fall to the ground.
