Man, 21, critical after assault outside Marketown shopping centre

A BRUTAL bashing outside Marketown shopping centre on Thursday morning has left a young man fighting for his life in hospital.

Police are on the hunt for two men who were seen by witnesses fleeing the scene on Steel Street shortly after 3am.

Detectives were told the 21-year-old man was was punched “several” times in the head by one of the two men.

The man fell to the ground, hitting his head, before the men fled south on Steel Street.

Witnesses have described the two men as being Caucasian in appearance and aged in their 20s.

“One man had a thin build with short brown hair and crooked teeth. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and black cap,” a police description said.

“The other man was wearing a white t-shirt and is not further described.”

The 21-year-old is in intensive care in a critical condition at John Hunter Hospital.

Newcastle City crime manager Detective Inspector Peter Mahon confirmed police had obtained CCTV footage of the incident.

He appealed for those responsible to turn themselves in at Newcastle police station.

“We are encouraging those responsible or witnesses to this incident to contact police or present themselves at Newcastle Police Station,” he said in a statement.
