A MAYFIELD man who was tasered by police after allegedly robbing a service station, attempting to carjack a taxi and threatening others with a knife has been refused bail.

Hayden John Forbes, 42, did not apply for bail and was formally refused during a brief mention in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday.

Mr Forbes stands accused of robbing the Caltex service station at Islington of a packet of cigarettes and a lighter shortly after 8am on Wednesday. It is alleged the 42-year-old then left the store to flag down a passing taxi before attempting to carjack the driver.

Mr Forbes followed the driver to a nearby industrial store on Elizabeth Street, Tighes Hill, where police allege he stole a mobile phone while armed with a Stanley knife, according to court documents. Police entered the store at that time. Mr Forbes was arrested after being tasered by officers and the knife secured, police said. He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital for an existing medical condition. The matter was adjourned to February 21.
