Newcastle Herald Short Takes: Friday, March 2, 2018

IS it just my imagination or is the traffic congestion worse around the Charlestown bypass and Cardiff since the state government fixed the public transport? That’s right; the Transport Minister doesn’t know where Newcastle is so we can’t expect much.

Peter Grant, Speers Point

COLIN Fordham (Short Takes, 28/2): I agree you never kick a dead dog, but being a country bred lad I stand by the fact you are better off putting a bullet in a useless dog than feeding one.

Steve Barnett, Fingal Bay

ISN’T that funny Richard Ryan, we are the only country that wants to change their flag because of indigenous people of their country (Letters, 26/2). Every country unites under the flag that they have for hundreds of years why can't we? It's becoming a joke now. Let's close the gap and unite as one happy country, together under our wonderful flag that all our servicemen and veterans have fought and died for proudly. So I say leave it the hell alone.

Colin Geatches, Mayfield

I READ where Donald Trump wants teachers to carry guns. If teachers carried guns when I went to school in the ’50s, I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this letter now.

John Keen, Gateshead

AS a regular Newcastle Herald reader, sometimes seeing reports of criminals released on bail and alleged perpetrators of various other offences let off with slap-on-the-wrist penalties, I wonder at the frustration that the police and prosecutors must endure, plus the disappointment and bewilderment of victims, witnesses and general public. I am reminded of a quotation (the author unknown to me): Justice and Law are very distant cousins who are not on speaking terms.

John Chaplin, Merewether

IMPORTANT message for Malcolm: with the strength of the Coalition now consolidated on the back bench in the form of Abbott and Joyce, could I pass onto Mr Turnbull a message relevant to him and to this time of the year – beware the Ides of March!

Ron Thomson, Salamander Bay

I READ with interest about the upcoming global upheaval that is upon us, all I can say is we only have ourselves to blame. Food, water, power supply and cash will rule everything. Those who disagree are naive.

Brad Hill, Singleton

COME on Bill Slicer (Short Takes, 27/2) can't you at least wait until the season kicks off?

Mark Keenan, Merewether

AGREEING with Melville Brauer (Letters, 22/2); I find it somewhat difficult to imagine that if some of these young ladies ever reproduce, that the offspring will actually emerge in a smudged state.

John Bradford, Beresfield

WILL you be supporting the Newcastle Knights this season?

Yes 77.52%, No 12.39%, I don't care 10.08%
