Registered sex offender and his wife charged with accessing child pornography and making child abuse material

A CHILD sex offender and his wife stand accused of making child abuse material.

Police arrested the husband and wife on Saturday and took them to Maitland police station where they were charged with using a child (14 years or older) for the production of child abuse material.

The pair, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were also charged with using a carriage service to access child porn.

The 31-year-old man – who is a registered sex offender – will face the additional charges of contravening a prohibition order and failing to comply with reporting obligations.

Newcastle Local Court heard on Monday that the man suffered from an intellectual disability, and there were concerns for his safety given the nature of the charges.

The man did not say anything as his matter was heard.

Magistrate Les Brennan noted that correctional staff should “consider” placing him in isolation at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Area hospital.

The duo will front court on separate matters on Wednesday.
