Newcastle business 20/20: Watch the story of Newcastle Airport

Newcastle Airport has expanded its services to include international check-in and is looking towards offering overseas flights.

Before passengers could take-off from the Hunter to any destination in the world, it all started on a much smaller scale.

When it opened in 1948 for its first commercial flight, the airport was referred to as the ‘tin shed’. Passengers would stop in Newcastle on the Sydney to Brisbane flight, a leg which has since become one of the most popular routes.

These days Newcastle is a destination in its own right and thousands of people stream through the airport every year. Watch the story of this Hunter-based business.

The series 20/20: Looking Back, Moving Forward has been produced by creative agency Out Of The Square Media in partnership with the Newcastle Herald. The initiative highlights the success of veteran Hunter businesses. Read more here.
