Tigers have kick started their premiership defence with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Souths in Saturday’s grand final replay at Newcastle International Hockey Centre.
Midfielder Prue Garvin scored the Newcastle District Women’s Hockey Association Premier League match winner with two minutes remaining after Souths levelled proceedings less than 60 seconds earlier.
It was a dramatic finish to the first-round encounter after Amy Capaldi found the back of the net just eight minutes into the new season.
Elsewhere and Oxfords beat newly merged Avoca-Entrance 1-0, returning University went down 4-0 to Regals and Gosford edged past Erina 3-2.
In the opening round of the men’s Hunter Coast Premier Hockey League and The Entrance accounted for University 3-0 on Sunday after Wests scored a second-half equaliser in a 1-all draw with Norths on Saturday.
The scheduled game between reigning champions Gosford and Souths was deferred. Maitland had the bye.
Meanwhile, Norths clubman Matt Dawson has helped the Kookaburras claim the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with a 2-1 win over England in Saturday’s final capping off an undefeated tournament in Malaysia.
