Passenger dies in car crash at Congewai

A MAN is dead and an investigation is under way after a car crash south of Cessnock early on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Congewai Road in Congewal shortly after 1am after reports the car had crashed into a tree.

Two women, 28 and 25, were taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

A passenger, a man who police believe to be aged in his 20s, died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

Hunter Valley police and the Crash Investigation Unit set up a crime scene and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In a separate accident, two Westpac rescue helicopters were dispatched to the notorious Bucketts Way at Bakers Creek, north of Gloucester, after a two-car crash shortly before 10.30am.

A teenager was flown to John Hunter Hospital with a head injury, while another was flown to Gloucester Hospital with minor injuries.

A third patient was being treated at the scene.
