EIGHT of Newcastle’s best chefs will take to the stoves together to serve more than 1500 dishes at a long-table charity lunch seating 200 people tomorrow.
The chefs taking part are a who’s who of the East End dining scene: Lesley Taylor of Le Petite Deux and Longworth House, Rustica’s Mark Hosie, Restaurant Mason’s Chris Thornton, Bar Petite’s Tony Harrison and Raul Cabrera of Bocados Spanish Kitchen.
Rounding out the ranks will be Babak Abbaszadeh of Cafe Zeytoon, Cathy Fren of Oma’s Kitchen and world-renowned pastry chef and chocolatier Dean Gibson.
The chefs donated time to raise funds for Soul Cafe, which provides 800 meals a week to disadvantaged Hunter residents.
It also facilitates free medical, legal, Centrelink and other services.
‘‘I thought it was time we gave something back to the community,’’ Lesley Taylor said.
‘‘Soul Cafe runs on volunteers [who] tirelessly work to assist the disadvantaged. I spoke to the chefs in the area about doing something to help them out, and all agreed to come on board without hesitation.’’
Hunter Street will be closed to traffic between Watt and Bolton streets for the event, which is sponsored by Taylor, Tropic Asphalts and Westpac.
