Rally draws 1200 to save SIDS centre

More than 1200 cars from the Hunter and Central Coast hit the roads yesterday in support of families who have lost a child.

The SIDS and Kids car cruise was the third of its kind this year. Cars started their engines at the twin service stations on the F3 and at Hunter Stadium in the morning, finishing at Stockton Foreshore about 11.30am.

Organiser Sara Mattson said it was a great show of support from the community.

‘‘We usually have around 1000 but, because the weather was so nice, I think we got a couple more,’’ she said.

SIDS and Kids fight to help prevent infant and child deaths, and support families who have experienced a loss.

The organisation’s drop-in centre in Hamilton-South is at risk of closing and Mrs Mattson wants to raise $200,000 to ensure its survival. Yesterday’s rally yielded almost $10,000, to go with $20,000 raised by two earlier cruises.

‘‘We’re still a long way away but we’re getting there.’’
