Irlen Diagnostic Clinic
In Health & Medical

We diagnose a type of visual processing dysfunction called Irlen Syndrome. Many children have unexplained difficulties with reading and they are found to have this problem. When diagnosed, they wear coloured Irlen lenses as glasses and this helps them to see the words more clearly.
Many people with Irlen experience visual distortions like words moving on the page, words fading and disappearing as they look at them, straight lines look crooked or wavy, some words have a “halo” of light behind them, some have shadows around them, and sometimes, the words merge together so that there are no spaces between them. All of these things make it difficult to read or to learn to read.
A number of people experience regular headaches and/or migraines that are light-induced. Irlen lenses filter out that part of the light spectrum that is causing the problem for those people. A small number of people with Irlen experience depth perception problems, so that the world looks two dimensional instead of three dimensional, so have trouble judging distances that make it hard to walk up and down stairs without holding on.
