O'Reilly takes lead in NSW PGA Championships

FOR the second time in a week a Newcastle amateur golfer could win an Australasian PGA Tour event tomorrow.

Toronto’s Callan O’Reilly took a one-shot lead in the NSW PGA Championships at Moss Vale today with a stunning six-under 66 in the third round.

The performance followed the 22-year-old’s opening rounds of 71 and 67 to move him to 204, 12 under par, ahead of NSW’s second-round leader Matt Stieger (205).

Last Sunday Charlestown’s Jake Higginbottom won the New Zealand Open as an amateur and missed out on $72,000 in prizemoney.

On Tuesday the 19-year-old turned professional and was the first-round leader at Mt Broughton Golf and Country Club on Thursday before dropping to ninth today at 210 (65-73-72), six under par.

“[If] those things happen they happen, if not, it doesn’t matter it will open up doors anyway.”

With 18 holes to play, O’Reilly is confident he can snatch the biggest victory of his career.

“I’m hitting it really well and the main thing is I’ve been keeping it in play,” he said.
