Police investigating overnight robberies

POLICE are investigating two overnight Hunter robberies at Hamilton and Anna Bay.

Two men jumped over the rear fence of the Anna Bay Tavern about 1am, police said.

The pair walked around for a short time before apparently smashing their way into the pub with a sledgehammer.

Police said the pair damaged two poker machines, stealing cash from inside, as well as stealing a wall safe and its contents.

One man was described as having a large build and was wearing a blue jumper and grey track pants.

His accomplice was identified only as wearing dark clothing.

Newcastle police are also investigating a separate incident where a Hamilton woman was robbed climbing out of her car last night.

The 49-year-old was climbing out of her car on Samdon Street about 11pm last night when a man rushed up and pushed her over, grabbing her handbag.

Police dogs tracked the stolen handbag into nearby Cleary Street, where it was found discarded.

Cash and credit cards were taken.

The man has been described as about 183cm tall with a solid build and a fair complexion.

He also had a goatee and was wearing a black hoodie and black pants at the time of the attack.

Anyone with information on either incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
