TOPICS: Old tape unearths vintage INXS gig

BEFORE INXS played to oceans of people at Wembley, they played the Newcastle Workers Club.

A tape has crossed our desk of their gig there, which happened 29 years ago yesterday.

It was recorded discreetly by someone operating the sound equipment, and it's quite brilliant.

Michael Hutchence banters bawdily with the crowd.

"You'll have to excuse the lyrics," he says, as he introduces a cover of Smoke On the Water.

"I know it's really f - - -ed and unprofessional, but I just can't remember these things."

The 21-song set also included The Swing, I Send a Message, Original Sin and Don't Change.

Were any Topics readers among the 2000 people at the INXS gig on January 2, 1984?
