Kurt Fearnley wins OZ day 10K

NEWCASTLE Wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley produced a sensational sprint to win his ninth straight OZ day 10K in Sydney today.

The three-time Paralympian held off of international competitors Josh Cassidy (Canada) and Kota Hokinoue (Japan) to win by three seconds.

Fearnley, who delivered an Australia Day address on Tuesday, completed the course in 21 minutes and 42 seconds.

Madison de Rozario was too strong in the women’s event, breaking away from the pack early and going on to win comfortably.

Her time of 24 minutes and 41 seconds has unofficially broken the record set by Switzerland’s Edith Hunkeler in 2010 at 24 minutes and 46 seconds.
