Hurricanes eye maiden finals appearance

HUNTER Hurricanes player-coach Daniel Marsden said the efforts of his young guns in wins over Adelaide at Lambton Pool has him optimistic of a maiden finals appearance for the National Water Polo League club.

Gordon Marshall and Nathan Power scored four goals each against Adelaide Jets in a 13-9 win on Thursday night and bagged two apiece on Friday night in a 10-7 victory.

The pair, along with Matt Skinner, were standouts in the wins which have given the men’s side four victories from eight games this season.

‘‘Nathan Power was wonderful on both nights and Gordon Marshall was very good last night,’’ Marsden said from Sydney, where Newcastle were dominating the NSW country districts championships.

‘‘Matt Skinner was also strong in both games.

‘‘It’s really heartening to see the young guys stepping up among all the experienced guys  in the side.

‘‘It’s looking good for the rest of the season, so fingers crossed it keeps going.’’

Scott Berry, who scored twice on Friday night, has a back complaint but Marsden is hopeful he will be fit for the testing road trip to Brisbane this week.

Hunter play the Queensland Breakers and Brisbane Barracudas twice each from Thursday and Sunday.

While the Hurricanes men’s side have recovered from a slow start to the year, the women’s team’s continue to frustrate Marsden with their efforts in front of goal.

The Hurricanes lost 9-3 on Friday and 12-6 on Thursday to remain winless.

Marsden said Hunter created more than enough goal-scoring opportunities in both games.
