WHAT a surprise to read Saturday's page 3 article "Pier where it all began" (Herald 10/3) concerning the radar investigations to be undertaken on Nobbys breakwall to identify where the original Macquarie Pier exists.
As part of my daughter's home schooling we recently began studying Nobbys landform and how it has changed since Newcastle's birth.
Lo and behold, what was the first opinion expressed by my 10-year-old but, "Wow! wouldn't it be cool if you could still see where Governor Macquarie laid the foundation stone."
With so many locals and tourists visiting this area each week I can only hope the Coal River Working Party have success with the investigations and that funding is forthcoming so that Novocastrians and visitors alike can be richer for experiencing this link to the past.
