REGARDING ‘‘Bottle find fuels deposit push’’ (Herald 23/11), this should not be up for discussion and should be a must nationwide.
It’s funny that we follow Europe for emissions trading, vehicle safety and other key topics, yet bottle recycling is not?
Pretty much every supermarket where I lived in Germany had bottle-return areas. Drinks were sold in hard plastic crates with a refund on them as well, instead of cardboard, which is also found littering our bush.
It’s not a hard topic to digest: you pay a fee and you get it back when recycled.
Similar schemes are used over in Europe where, at festivals, they use hard plastic cups for beers etc with a 50¢ refund when brought back to the bar. No waiters needed and less rubbish to clean up.
We whinge about pollution, but simple tactics are not used.
