I MUST say I agreed with many of the remarks made by Gabriel Wingate-Pearse (‘‘Better the burqa than budgie smugglers’’ Herald 4/10).
The clothes worn by many young girls these days are in my opinion, and obviously Gabriel’s, disgusting. I admire the modesty of Muslim women.
I remember how we, Christian women, were not allowed into a church without wearing a hat or a head covering of some kind.
I remember, too, a wedding I went to many years ago where the bridesmaids did not have a headdress. The priest refused to carry out the marriage ceremony before they covered their heads – with a handkerchief, believe it or not.
While I think the burqa is not at all flattering, I think the hijab is quite attractive.
