FOLLOWING in the footsteps of bigger, flatter cities, Newcastle finally has a new way to ride.
Spinway installed two bike-rent stations on Wednesday, one outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the other outside the Maritime Museum, both in Honeysuckle.
The installation has arrived in time for Bikefest, but will be a permanent fixture at the foreshore.
At $11 for one hour, $22 for four hours and $33 for 24 hours, the bikes can be paid for using a credit card 24 hours a day.
Helmets and locks come with the bike hire and can be collected and returned at Crowne Plaza reception and the Maritime Museum.
The bikes have tracking devices to prevent theft, stainless steel frames, puncture-proof tyres and a unisex step-through design.
The station is solar powered and portable, allowing for easy installation and no damage to the ground.
If the venture is successful, more stations may be installed throughout Newcastle.
