POLICE believe human remains found in dense bushland near Kariong on Tuesday belong to a man reported missing more than two years ago.
A bushwalker discovered the skeletal remains about 2pm on Tuesday before a crime scene was established and the remains taken to Newcastle for forensic examination.
Police said formal identification was needed although they believed the remains belonged to missing man Neil Hinkley.
Mr Hinkley, 58, was reported missing from Point Clare on December 19, 2012.
Extensive searches failed to find any trace of him.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
