MONDAY was a lovely 21 degrees and mostly sunny. Why are householders allowed to light their domestic wood heaters during these temperatures?
The washing on the clothes line is filled with the acrid smoke that emits from the chimneys. My house had to be completely closed to stop the smoke coming inside. The evening air was a mass of wood smoke.
These temperatures are not cold enough for the smoke to rise high into the atmosphere. It therefore hangs around and makes breathing outside difficult. Why is there no regulation regarding domestic wood heaters?
A sensible regulation would be to only light them from June 1 until August 31, during the winter months. It is about time the state government and local councils looked at this health issue.
After all, the coal mines get enough criticism from environmentalists and the media for the pollution they supposedly emit.
Heaven help our lungs if every household lit a domestic wood heater, which would be absolutely legal.
