THE first rehearsal of Newcastle’s biggest orchestra on Sunday uncovered some hidden gems, according to conductor David Banney.
A ‘‘festival’’ of music at Christ Church Cathedral later this month will feature the Christ Church Camerata playing with string players of all ages and abilities.
Mr Banney put the call out for Newcastle players to join him for the first rehearsal on Sunday, and said he was ‘‘excited’’ by the roughly 40 members of the string-playing public who turned out.
‘‘It was great just to find out who’s out there, we had a few really excellent young players who I hadn’t met before so that was exciting for me, as well as some really young players who have never played in an orchestra before,’’ Mr Banney said.
‘‘It’s going to be an amazing concert.’’
The concert is on Sunday, August 16, at Christ Church Cathedral at 3pm and will begin with pieces played by the combined orchestra.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for concessions and $70 for a family.
