Lake's fairytale finals run ends

LAKE Macquarie's fairytale run in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union finals series came to an abrupt end today, crushed 46-8 by a rampant Merewether Carlton at Waratah Oval.

The Roos were aiming to progress to their first grand final since promoted to Premier Rugby in 2002.

They disposed of Wanderers 34-24 to snatch fifth place, and then beat Maitland 23-16 and Southern Beaches 20-10 in two sudden death shoot outs.

But they had no answer to the Greens in the preliminary final.

The defending premiers, Merewether led 24-3 at half-time and extended the margin to 46-3 before the Roos ran in a late consolation try.

Lewis Dunn scored a brace and Mark Wade, Ed Macdonald, Bill Coffey, Darby O'Leary and Sam Clifton all crossed for the Greens.

Merewether will now meet minor premiers Hamilton in the grand final at No.2 Sportsground next Saturday.

The match is a repeat of last year's decider which Merewether won 20-16.
