Police released images of five men following massive melee on Darby Street where two police officers were assaulted

POLICE have released images of five men wanted for questioning over a wild brawl at Cooks Hill where two police were assaulted.

Emergency services were called to a licensed premises on Darby Street about 10.30pm on October 8 after reports of a group of people fighting outside the business.

Police were able to separate the parties and four men, aged 18, 21, 22 and 23, were arrested and taken to Newcastle police station.

During the arrests, it’s alleged two male officers – a sergeant and a senior constable – were assaulted.

Three of the arrested men were charged with using offensive language in/near public place, resisting an officer in the execution of their duty and assaulting an officer in execution of duty and affray.

The trio will next face Newcastle Local Court on December 8.

The 18-year-old man was charged with using offensive language in/near public place and resisting or hindering or police officer in the execution of duty and has been dealt with by Newcastle Local Court.

“As inquiries continue, police have released CCTV images and would like to speak to five men who may be able to assist them,’’ a police statement said.
