Train driver finishing work at Sandgate attacked in early morning robbery

A FEMALE train driver has been bashed and robbed as she walked to her car following a shift at Sandgate.

The 37-year-old freight train driver has suffered a significant head injury after she was attacked from behind by a man on Mangrove Road about 2.30am.

He stole her mobile phone and wallet, which contained $200 in cash.

The phone and wallet were later retrieved.

The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she needed stitches to a wound to her forehead.

Police dogs were able to track a scent to a boat ramp on nearby River Road.

Detectives are reviewing closed circuit television footage of nearby businesses.
