LOVE was in the air in Newcastle on Valentine’s Day, as a fundraiser with plenty of heart raised more than $11,000 for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

Kerryn and Mick Tippett were grateful the community had gotten behind the Hunter Hearts campaign, which was inspired by their little girl, Maddie, who died of heart complications on February 18, 2014.

“My heart is full of gratitude,” Ms Tippett said.

“The generosity that has been shown will help make the next few days easier as we approach the third anniversary of Maddie’s passing.”

More than 400 “lovelocks” were attached to a large heart-shaped metal frame at 48 Watt Street, Newcastle, on Tuesday to raise money for the hospital and staff that fought to save Maddie’s life.

Ms Tippett said donations were still being received via

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp said he would make a “community recognition statement” in NSW Parliament on Wednesday to acknowledge Ms Tippett’s “heartfelt efforts.”
