Shock marriage proposal at World's Greatest Shave event at The Squire's Maiden

TINA Dottori knew something was amiss when she saw her boyfriend Paul Oakes take to the floor.

Ms Dottori, 24, had raised more than $1330 in sponsorship to have her waist-long hair cut at The Squire’s Maiden on Sunday as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. Her mother and younger sister were watching online from her native Argentina.

“He is always so shy so I was shocked when he grabbed the microphone, I thought he was going to say something about my family watching,” Ms Dottori said.

Instead, Mr Oakes dropped to one knee and asked a surprised Ms Dottori to be his wife, roughly two years after they met while he was travelling through her hometown of Mendoza and two weeks after her partner visa was approved.

“I’m so excited and have so many emotions – I have a fiance now, oh my God,” she said through tears. “I cannot believe it. He is such an amazing boy.”

Firefighter Mr Oakes said he wanted to propose in public in front of the couple’s friends.

“It shows you’re not afraid to tell the world ‘This is who I love’ – it’s how love is meant to be celebrated.”

Ms Dottori said she had “the best feeling in her chest” after Mr Oakes’ mother shaved her hair last year for the cause.

“My grandmother passed away from cancer and I’ve always thought it was really good to help others,” Ms Dottori said. “My hair is going to grow – I am choosing to lose it, but people with cancer do not.”

Brendan Clarke, Lucas Philipson, Glen Spicer, Mick Blackett, Trevor Mazlin, Thomas Quinn and Patty Flanagan also had their heads shaved for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Lucia Hancock, 7, donated the $17.10 in her piggybank to have her hair sprayed blue.
