WICKHAM’s changing of the guard has taken a major step forward as the former train station fades in the shadow of the suburb’s new transport interchange.
Fences and platforms have started to disappear from the former railway station in the biggest change to any of the former stops so far.
The changes come just weeks after the station’s demolition was announced.
Wickham station originally opened in 1936. The structure will eventually be replaced with a light rail depot building including offices.
There are no plans to demolish Newcastle station but Civic station’s fate remains less than assured.
UrbanGrowth consultation revealed split votes over what should happen to Civic.
“People expressed personal and historical social connections with the station buildings,” the report said.
