THE Wallsend Winter Fair received a warm reception on a hot August day on Sunday, as thousands flocked to the annual family-friendly event.

Run by the Wallsend Town Business Association, the fair regularly pulls more than 30,000 to the centre of town.

This year marked the 32nd since the event began as a chance to support the suburb’s local businesses, market stalls, community groups, charities, schools, sporting groups, entertainers and schools.

The festival kicked off with the traditional grand parade down Nelson Street, led by brass bands including from Marching Koalas and the Hunter School of Performing Arts.

Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery said it was a chance to show off the suburb.

“For me, the annual fair is all about the people and the place,” she said.

“It’s an opportunity to showcase the attractions of our community to newcomers.”
