More than 20 years later, the former University of Newcastle student’s “dream will come true” this weekend, when her five minute documentary Awake will screen at the Newcastle International Animation Festival. “Watching a film is like being in a dream – you forget the outside world and are immersed in a new place,” she said. “Animation is even more creative – you don’t have gravity or physics to fight.” The festival opens on Friday with an international program. The Australian showcase featuring two films by UON students, another from local Tim Cantt and a premiere from UON graduate Dan Smith, plus an adult-only program, will show on Saturday.
