MACQUARIE have now lost their third major forward for 2017 with Scorpions prop Adam Swadling succumbing to a severely broken thumb.
X-rays this week revealed Swadling has five fractures and will miss Sunday’s preliminary final against Central at Townson as well as any consequent trip to the decider the following weekend.
He came from the field on Sunday after suffering the injury late in Macquarie’s 35-8 major semi-final loss to Wests at Harker.
It means Swadling joins fellow Scorpions hardmen Blake Gallen (broken leg) and Brendan Worth (elbow) on the sidelines.
* STILL on injuries and Lakes under-19 winger Jack Field was operated on Tuesday night, 48 hours after breaking his femur in Sunday’s major semi-final win over Cessnock.
It was a nasty one from all reports but fortunately the pain-relief medication kicked in pretty early with Field managing to transport himself from dressing sheds at Harker Oval to the more peaceful Bahamas.
He remains in John Hunter Hospital.
* CESSNOCK officials expect to announce next year’s first grade coach on Friday night.
* HAS the first grade grand final trophy been given a makeover?
* AND hats off to Western Suburbs playmaker Jade Porter, who notched up 200 Newcastle Rugby League games in reserves on Saturday.
The multiple premiership winner and representative player not only scored a win but was surrounded by his kids proudly wearing T-shirts branded in his very own nickname … #thefreak.
