FIRE crews spent hours battling a blaze inside a recycling plant at Mayfield West on Wednesday, with at least a dozen firefighters tasked to the job.
The fire – situated inside the Benedict Recycling complex on McIntosh Drive – ignited shortly before 11am and was still burning in the evening.
Employees were evacuated but there were no injuries.
The fire sent a plume of smoke over parts of the Mayfield West industrial area.
The recyclable materials were not believed to be toxic.
Meanwhile, dozens of residents were forced to evacuate from a unit block on Watkins Street in Merewether on Tuesday night after a fire on the ground floor.
The fire was contained to one unit which will require structural repairs.
Investigators will determine the cause of both fires.
