The University of Newcastle is working on plans for an ambitious new foray into the city centre.
The Herald reported last year that the university had bought vacant land near Wright Lane at Honeysuckle and planned to buy two adjacent sites encompassing part of the disused train line if a proposed rezoning of the rail corridor went ahead.
The university is keeping the plans under wraps, but the Herald has been told they could include recreation facilities and accommodation.
Hunter Development Corporation property development director Valentina Misevska would not comment about the speculation but said the university would be buoyed by the success of its nearby NewSpace building.
“They’ve had the great outcome on NewSpace, and that’s obviously brought a lot more people into the city and contributed to the vibrancy of the whole area,” she said.
Newcastle City Council will host a public forum into UrbanGrowth’s rezoning proposal for the rail corridor from 5.30pm on Wednesday.
