Man charged after drug raid on Gateshead business

A MAN has been charged after police allegedly unearthed more than $100,000 of cannabis from a business at an industrial estate in Gateshead.

The 55-year-old man was charged on a string of drug offences, including drug cultivation and supply, after Lake Macquarie detectives raided the Oakdale Road business shortly after 9am on Thursday.

Police allegedly seized dozens of cannabis plants from the property, as well as a lighting set-up and exhaust system.

A further two kilograms of cannabis were also seized.

Detectives spent hours on Thursday dismantling the hydroponic operation across three rooms of the building.

Police said the drugs had a potential street value of $135,000.

The man was granted conditional bail to front Belmont Local Court on November 29.

Employees at other businesses in the complex expressed shock as the raid unfolded.

“It’s hard to believe that could happen right under your nose,” one said.

The raid comes after police dismantled a massive cannabis operation in Newcastle last month.
