Newcastle Supercars: 100 photos capture all the action from the finale of the 2017 Supercars Championship

Bumper crowds of more than 192,000 people flowed through the Newcastle 500 precinct between Friday and Sunday for the inaugural Newcastle Supercars race and the finale of the 2017 Championship.

Adelaide’s season-opening Clipsal 500 attracted 244,000 in March, but the Newcastle 500 has immediately become one of the most popular races on the Supercars calendar.

Supercars chief executive James Warburton, who is stepping down from the role on December 22, said the crowd numbers justified the decision to bring the race to the Hunter.

Champion Jamie Whincup was crowned the winner in the race through Newcastle’s East End. The weather was glorious, Newcastle looked amazing on camera and the event was declared a success by Supercars CEO James Warburton.

The circuit, a 2.6 kilometres long track which features amazing views of the city, Nobbys Beach and Shortland Esplanade, really put drivers to the test.
